Aska Matsumoto

Aska Matsumoto, born in Tokyo in 1981, started her musical
education at age 3. Aska has won many prizes not only in
Japan but also abroad. She won 1st prize in the piano solo
division of the Piano Teachers’ National Association Piano
Competition in 1998 and 2005, as well as in the piano concerto
division in 1998. Earlier Aska won 3rd prize and the Premio
Mozart Prize at the Premio Mozart Young Children’s Competition
held in Verona in 1988, for which she had been selected
to represent Japan. As a result she accepted an invitation
to perform on TV on Italian National TV Broadcasting’s programme,
zecchino d`oro. She took up offers to perform abroad and
she toured extensively, visiting Korea, Germany and the
UK between 1989 and 1994. She took 3rd prize at the Vienna
Music Competition in Japan in 1993, and made her debut piano
solo recital “The World of Fantasy” in Tokyo in 1995. She
won 2nd prize at the Japan Classical Music Competition (junior
high school division) in 1996, and 3rd prize at the Carl
Czerny International Piano Competition held in Prague in
1997.
Aska continued her musical studies at MESAR HAUS College
in Japan during 2000, where she added to her classical repertoire
other types of music including pop and jazz. After graduation,
she has developed her career in various directions including
recording, composing and writing lyrics for TV animation
programmes, performing solo piano in the open as well as
an accompanying vocalists. Aska has recently became interested
in performing piano and keyboard jazz arrangements for classical
music enthusiasts, and linking classical music to other
musical areas.
She is now learning “how to enjoy music with music” with
her piano teacher, Ms Yasumi Taki.
